Rafaël Rozendaal

Rafaël Rozendaal is one of the best-known artists in the digital art world. Having made websites-as-art-objects since 2001, his work takes shape through a range of transformations – from movement into abstraction, from virtual into physical space, and from website to print – with all of them informing each other. Rozendaal develops his ideas from drawings and sketches, then translated and distributed through programming and coding. In his latest NFT projects, Rozendaal combines visual motifs and themes from recent art history with current forms of communication and developments in blockchain to create vibrant, ever changing dynamic artworks that speak to the broad context of contemporary abstract art. Physical & Digital

Kanbas is rooted in mid-century modern Latin American art, which ultimately brought us to the on-chain digital art of today (and tomorrow). 20th century LatAm artists were ahead of their time. They were visionaries, innovators, technologists, conceptualists, and cultural critics. They introduced aesthetic ideas inherent to the digital art we collect today, concepts related to algorithms, color theory, coding, collaboration, kinetic dynamism, playfulness, democratized modes of making, the meaning of value and systems, and movement - of art, humanity, and society. Our interest in digital art can be directly traced back to our appreciation for LatAm art. View our favorite pairs from our digital and physical collection here

Chronophotograph is the companion collection to Vol. 2, Series 1 - Noumenon. This series is made in support of LACMA’s Art and Technology Lab, presented in dialogue with the chronophotopgraphic work of Eadweard Muybridge in the LACMA archives. On a time locked schedule, a blockchain transaction can be triggered to metaphorically "capture" an observation of a Noumenon, minting a new token. The blocknumber serves as the seed for a deterministic program to generate an image in the style of Muybridge's chronophotographs (a technique from the Victorian era that captured and analyzed motion through a series of still photographs).
